Saturday and Sunday, August 8 & 9, Michiganders and out-of-state visitors can explore the trails thanks to a free Off Road Vehicle or ORV weekend. With more than 3,500 miles of off-road trails, DNR officials say there’s plenty to get out and see.
It’s an effort to get riders to experience the outdoors in Michigan and encourage them to purchase an ORV license or trail permit. Throughout the year, fees generated through ORV licenses and trail permits are reinvested back into the ORV system.
“It’s the greatest resource we have I think is just the outdoors and so many people live here for the outdoors or want to stay here for the outdoors and these free weekends are introductions to let people go out and try some things they may not have tried before,” said Michigan DNR Spokesperson, John Pepin.
All ORV rules and laws still apply during the free ORV weekend and if you have to use a state park to access the trails you want to ride, you need the recreation pass as well.
An ORV license ($26.25) is required to ride eligible county roads, frozen surface of public waters, state forest (that are open to ORV use) and eligible national forest roads. A license is not required to operate on private lands; however, an ORV trail permit is required to ride on state-designated ORV Trail/Routes and special ORV-use areas.
WHEN DO I NEED AN ORV TRAIL PERMIT?
An ORV trail permit (an additional $10 for a total of $36.25) is required when operating on designated ORV Trail / Routes and special ORV-use areas. A trail permit is not required for private lands. ORV trail permits are not valid as a stand-alone license; an ORV license must also be purchased.
