PINES & MINES MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAIL SYSTEM The Pines and Mines Mountain Bike Trail System, located in Iron County, Wisconsin, and the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan offers over 200 miles of marked and mapped mountain biking opportunities in the abundant public lands of the area. The Pines & Mines
Mountain Bike Trail system wanders through the forests of
Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Trails
range from quiet gravel roads to single track backcountry
trails. Throughout the hundreds of miles of trails, you will
find wildlife around each corner. There may be a lake just
ahead or an eagle high above you. Keep your eyes open and
enjoy the trails. The two developed areas in Michigan's UP are the Ehlco Complex and the Henry Lake and Pomeroy Lake Complex. The Ehlco Complex located approximately 6 miles of the Bergland on Forest Road #360 offer very difficult riding on the one-two track trails. Please use caution and discretion when determining your mountain bike abilities while riding on expert trails. There are over 25 miles of designated trail segments found there. Four of the seven trails established are rated easy to intermediate and range from 1.1 to 8.3 miles in length. The Henry Lake and Pomeroy Lake Complex can be accessed south of Marenisco from Forest Roads #8100 or #8300. Many of these trails are beginner to intermediate level and are generally on gravel based forestry roads.
Iron County has been instrumental in developing Heritage tourism, which offers recreational opportunities, as well as recapturing historical events. Montreal is among Iron County's most scenic and historically significant communities. It is the site of the world's deepest iron mine, which at it's closing in 1962, had reached a vertical depth of 4,335 feet. Take a break after mountain biking and drive through this quiet little town where nearly all the old mining houses are painted white, with green roofs for good luck.
Partners in the development of the Pines and Mines Mountain Biking Trail System are the Iron County Task Force on Tourism Development, the Ottawa National Forest, TRALE UP, the Western Upper Peninsula Convention and Visitors Bureau, and additional Gogebic and Ontonagon county interests. Lake
